Why Pickleball Paddles Delaminate — And How to Tell Before It Ruins Your Game
Delamination is the most common way a pickleball paddle dies, and it usually starts working long before you can see it.
Delamination is the separation of a paddle's face from its core. The face and the core are two different materials bonded together, and when that bond fails the face begins to float independently. The paddle does not crack or visibly break. It just starts launching the ball further than it should, unpredictably, in the region where the bond has gone.
It is the single most common failure mode in modern pickleball paddles, and it is the reason a lot of serious players replace three or four paddles a year.
What is actually happening inside
A typical paddle is a sandwich: a carbon or fibreglass face, a polymer honeycomb core, and a second face on the back. Those layers are joined with adhesive under heat and pressure. Every ball strike sends a shock through that bond line.
Over thousands of impacts the adhesive fatigues. Once a small area lets go, the unsupported face flexes further on contact than the bonded area around it — and a face that flexes further returns more energy. That is the trampoline effect. The paddle gets hotter, not deader, which is why players often notice it first as balls sailing long rather than as a loss of power.
The separated zone then grows, because the boundary between bonded and unbonded areas carries concentrated stress on every hit.
The three tests
1. The tap test
Hold the paddle by the handle and tap the face in a grid pattern with a knuckle or a fingernail. A healthy paddle returns the same tight, high sound everywhere. A delaminated region returns a lower, hollower, drum-like note. This is the fastest test and it catches most cases.
2. The edge press
Press firmly with your thumb around the perimeter of the face, working around the paddle. Anywhere the surface gives more than its neighbours, or where you feel a faint click, the bond is compromised. Perimeter delamination is common because the edge is where impact stress and manufacturing tolerance both concentrate.
3. The rattle
Hold the paddle to your ear and rotate it slowly. Loose core fragments, or a face that has separated enough to move, produce a faint rattle or shift. If you hear this, the paddle is already well past the early stage.
What actually causes it

Why thermoformed construction changes the maths
Thermoforming builds the paddle as one continuous shell rather than bonding separate face, core, and edge pieces together. There is no perimeter glue seam — which removes the specific bond line where delamination most often starts.
It is not immunity. A thermoformed paddle can still fail, and early thermoformed designs had their own problem: the compressed foam perimeter could crack under repeated edge impact. Better designs addressed that with foam injection rather than pre-formed foam inserts.
What thermoforming genuinely removes is the peel path. In a bonded paddle, once separation starts at the edge it has an open seam to travel along. In a continuous shell there is no seam to travel along.
The honest summary: thermoforming does not make a paddle last forever. It removes the failure that kills most paddles first.
How to make any paddle last longer
- Never leave it in a car. Heat cycling is the leading preventable cause, and a closed car in summer easily exceeds anything the adhesive was designed for.
- Stop scraping the ground. Low dinks that clip the court drive repeated shock into the perimeter.
- Do not clash paddles. The celebratory tap costs you more than it looks like it does.
- Use a case. Not for looks — to stop the edge taking knocks in a bag.
- Test monthly. The tap test takes ten seconds and catching it early means you are still inside a warranty window.
Is a delaminated paddle illegal to play with?
In sanctioned play, yes — a delaminated paddle no longer conforms to the specification it was certified under, and the trampoline effect gives an unfair advantage. Governing bodies have removed specific models from approved lists over exactly this issue. In recreational play there is no enforcement, but you should know that a paddle that is launching balls is not doing so because you improved.
What to do if yours has gone
Delamination that appears without impact damage is a manufacturing defect, and any manufacturer worth buying from covers it. Photograph the paddle, note when you bought it, and open a warranty claim. Do not sand it, glue it, or clamp it — a repair attempt voids every warranty in the industry.
